Zapata debuts in majors at the expense of the long-lived Feliciano

Bernabé Zapata achieved the first triumph of his career in a Grand Slam this Monday at the US Open. It had to be before another Spaniard, Feliciano lopez, to the third attempt of the Valencian in as many participations. Zapata, a 24-year-old circuit worker, had tried unsuccessfully this year at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

He entered the main draw as a repechage for his ranking (116th) and this time he came back twice to win by 5-7, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3 at 3:15. They were both separated in terms of experience by 75 majors, between the three of Bernabé and the 78 that the incombustible Feliciano fulfilled, who does not think about the withdrawal.

Zapata had merit against the furious López, who endorsed him 66 winning blows, 27 of direct service, although he also committed 55 errors to his opponent’s 22. That was perhaps the difference that decided the match in favor of Bernabé, who will face Donskoy or Auger-Aliassime in the second round.
