Andújar beats Delbonis and Martínez yields to Paul

Pablo Andújar beat Argentine Federico Delbonis in two sets with 6-2 and 7-6 (1) in one hour and 40 minutes of play and advanced to the round of 16 of the Tournament of Saint Petersburg (Russia). Andújar, number 92 in the ATP rankings, had a first set without major complications with a resounding 6-2 against an opponent who looked erratic and who saw him heading towards his tenth consecutive defeat.

In the second set, the Cuenca lost a 4-1 lead and the Azul (Buenos Aires) native forced the tiebreaker, but the Iberian again showed superiority and won with a final 7-6. Andújar’s rival in the next round will be Canadian Denis Shapovalov, current world number thirteen and second favorite of the competition after the Russian Andrey Rublev, defending champion.

Pedro Martínez yields in the first round

Pedro Martínez lost his match in two sets against American Tommy Paul, corresponding to the round of 32 of the Saint Petersburg Tournament (Russia). The Spanish, number 58 in the ATP ranking, lost his serve twice in the first stake to one of his rival, something that was enough for Paul to win the first set (3-6).

In the second set, the American, number 54 in the world, prevailed with his serve and broke Martinez again twice to take the final set (2-6) and certify their pass to the round of 16 after almost an hour and a half of meeting. Paul expects a rival in the round of 16, who will come out of the confrontation between the American -fifth seeded- Taylor Harry Fritz and Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.

This Wednesday, around 2:00 p.m., Albert Ramos plays his first round match against Croatian Marin Cilic.
