The recently proclaimed MVP of the women’s Eurobasket played in Valencia, Serbian Sonja Vasic, will be one of the flag bearers of her country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, a decision that makes her the first basketball player to receive that honor in the Balkan country.
Vasic, 32, announced his retirement after the Games before playing the Eurobasket with his selection, which took the gold and also aspires to the first place in the Tokyo competition. The player has played her last two seasons at Spar Girona, managing to expand her record with the victory in the 2020 Queen’s Cup.
Vasic will share standard bearer honors with Filip Filipovic, polo star and reigning Olympic champion. The International Olympic Committee allows delegations to present a male and a female athlete to carry the flag of their country, a change introduced at these Tokyo 2020 Games.
The player has twice won the Eurobasket (2015 and 2021) with her national team and won the Olympic bronze in 2016. At the club level, the Serbian has lifted the Euroleague three times (2009, 2010 and 2015).
