Climate change affects us all and curbing its consequences requires the joint work of people, industries, organizations and public administrations. Football is not alien to this reality and, therefore, initiatives have emerged from different areas to mitigate its environmental impact and be increasingly sustainable.
In this direction, one of the latest actions is the one announced by Iberdrola and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to promote the first Sustainable Soccer City at the concentration facilities of the Spanish soccer teams in Las Rozas, Madrid.

The production of this installation, with which the matches of the different soccer teams will be illuminated with renewable energy, is equivalent to the annual consumption of 30 homes and will avoid the emission of 22 tCO2 / year.
Promotion of sustainable mobility
Likewise, the facilities will be equipped with 20 charging points for electric vehicles. Any user of this category of vehicles who comes to the facilities will be able to use them with the guarantee of using 100% green energy from clean generation sources. Electric charging points will be available at the mobile application “Public Recharge Iberdrola”, the only one that incorporates verified information on all electric vehicle chargers operating in Spain and with which you can manage the geolocation of the charger, reserve it and pay for recharging from your mobile.
“For the Royal Spanish Football Federation it is a great satisfaction to be able to present this agreement for the Iberdrola Sustainable Soccer City. In these facilities, which are the home of all Spanish football in the Ciudad de Fútbol de Las Rozas, we will be able to expand our commitment to the sustainable development goals, the famous SDGs, on which the entire society is working worldwide. for the next 2030 “, he explains Rubén Rivera, Marketing Director of the REEF.
The Selection “plays fair”
This new agreement extends the one signed by Iberdrola and the RFEF on the occasion of the Women’s Soccer World Cup in France, in 2019. The sponsor of the team, Iberdrola, then undertook to offset the CO2 emitted by the Women’s Soccer Team with green energy. With this initiative, Spain became the first country with a national team that offset the carbon footprint of its players.
To calculate the emissions, Iberdrola took into account both the air and bus travel of the footballers and their companions, as well as the emissions derived from food and accommodation. In total, about 30 tons of CO2 during the group stage matches to be compensated with a green energy equivalent of 132,000 kWh.
“At Iberdrola we have been committed for years to promoting the sport practiced by women with the conviction that, through our actions, we fight for equal opportunities. But with alliances like this we go further, expanding the capacity to transform our sustainable activities to the field of sport. Making the City of Soccer the first sustainable sports city allows us to demonstrate the extraordinary impact of an energy model that, like sport, plays fair, is competitive and sustainable and offers opportunities in an inclusive way for all “, he explains Juan Luis Aguirrezabal, Director of Advertising, Brand and Global Sponsorship of Iberdrola.
