A billionaire sells a good bite of the Lakers

The billionaire Philip Anschutz, 81 years old, just sold 27% of the Los Angeles Lakers property Mark Walter and Todd Boehly, two of the owners of the MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers. This change makes two new members in the minority group largest and most significant within the franchise ownership, controlled by the Jerry Buss family.

The value of the cake that has changed hands is dizzying: about 1.35 billion dollars. The reason for the sale is unknown, as Anschutz owns other LA teams with the Kings (NHL) and the Galaxy (MLS), as well as being a co-owner of the Staples Center where several of the city’s teams play.

The sale and entry of the new minority owners now needs the go-ahead from the NBA board of governors.
